When do you take you baby to the doctor?

As many of you know we have horrible insurance so I won't get into that here. So I struggle taking my kids to the doctor unless it is really serious. Roo has been sick for several days now. No fever, just runny nose, not eating much, and fussy. Just when I think she is better, she gets worse. When do you decide your kids need to go in? (And pretend it will cost you at least $75.00 when you go.)

you do it when your gut tells you not to wait any longer.

Do you think she might have an ear infection? I did the same thing when my kids were little and couldn't tell me what was wrong--waited and waited because I didn't want to pay and I was always so afraid they'd just look at me like I was the paranoid mom of the world. Spencer ended up with raging ear infections EVERY TIME I took him in. And there went my Mother of the Year Award....again.

It's such a hard call. I agree with Bonnie--when your gut tells you. :) I hope she gets feeling better. Poor little thing.

I can't believe you get charged $75 every time you go!! That is crazy! I wish we were closer, and we would just have you come over to have Jerry look at her :(... I so hope she feels better soon! I go up and down with 'should I take the baby in, or should I wait'... it's so hard to know!!

Hey Great Job today, the program was so cute. You guys all did an awesome job. Sorry to hear the little one is not feeling good. That always just sucks.

Could it possibly be teeth? That's my conclusion to everything around here now. Blech. Ear infection is my fall back.

Um - my Mom learned her lesson the hard way when she thought I was faking it, so she didn't take me to the doctor. And when she finally took me, to prove to me that I wasn't sick - I had a ruptured ear drum. From then on out she took us right away. HOWEVER, that was with a $5 copay. I think ours is steep, but yours is outrageous!

I'd go in for - - - high fever that's stuck around for a while, odd symptoms, no/little reaction to medicine and as Bonnie said, the gut feeling.

But who am I, anyway? Um, hello, I'm still new at this, so take it as it is. Maybe it helped, maybe not.

Yeah--I can finally leave comments now! As for little Roo, since I have SO much experience . . . I'll refer to my sister the nurse and herself a mother of 4: "If it's not getting better, it's probably some type of infection so she should see a doctor soon to get on antibiotics."

It sounds like you have received very good advice. I was terrible when I had little kids--I was always taking them in and they'd make a liar out of me. I'd be saying to the pediatrician, "He really was so bad last night!" And, somehow they always seem worse then, but he'd be smiling and acting just fine when we finally got into the doctor's office. Was it because I was tired and wanted some sleep too? Good luck with your little one. I sympathize with your situation. $75 is outrageous. Maybe your pediatrician could advise you on when to come in since it costs you an arm and a leg. Love your blog!

Call your Uncle Walt and see what he has to say - he is five hours ahead and really good at over the phone consultations. I don't want to leave his number for the world so call me or your dad to get his number - it is an Idaho number - technology is amazing!
